How to Prevent House Fires
SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress works with the community to help prevent home fires. House fires contribute to many deaths annually. We feel its our duty to help prevent these as much as possible. These are some tips from us at your neighborhood SERVPRO.
First off, always check wiring in the home annually to make sure that everything is up to code. Fires caused by faulty wiring can be prevented. Electrical fires can be devastating to houses and apartment communities. Even electrical cords can cause damage. Check the electrical cords throughout your home for signs of fraying, and replace all frayed wires. Do not pinch or cover electrical cords with items such as rugs and carpet.
Being careless in the kitchen while cooking may also lead to a house fire. In fact, its one of the number one reasons for house fires. Never leave your pots or pans unattended on your stove. Keep a kitchen fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it. Keep your stove and oven clean. Built up grease can later ignite when the stove or oven is turned on. Never try and put out a grease fire with water. Always use baking powder or an extinguisher.
We are told that it takes less than five minutes for a fire to completely engulf most homes. There is not much time to decide what to do. Fire doesn't care what you need or want out of your home. It is critical to make a plan in advance. Hesitation could cost you, your life or the lives of others.
