Safety During Holidays
12/16/2019 (Permalink)
Put a Freeze on Holiday Fires! The holidays are a time when we put aside practicality to indulge whimsical tradition and fantasy. We hang many lights from the rooftops and all around the house and bring live trees into our living rooms. We all need to take a break from the normal routine we are in day in and day, but the magic of the holidays can be ruined so quickly by a serious injury or carelessly placed candle.
SERVPRO Katy/Cypress has some holiday tips that will keep you safe to enjoy the holiday season with family and friends!
Make sure to check the wiring on your Christmas lights. If the wires are frayed, replace them, even if they still work. The cost of new lights is minimal compared to the cost of fire damage restoration.
Next, SERVPRO encourages you to keep an eye on the weather while traveling. Texas is notorious for having big dips in the weather and temperature! If freezing temps are on their way while you will be out of town, make sure to wrap pipes, cover plants and take cold weather precautions just in case!
Also, candles are one of the top causes of holiday fire damage. You could possibly use battery-operated lights instead of candles to lower your risk of a accidental fire. If candles are needed for your holiday traditions, or are just too hard to part with, be careful not to place them too close to flammable curtains, greeting cards, or your Christmas tree.
SERVPRO wants you to enjoy the holiday season with as much safety as possible!

The locals here know that during the dead of the summer, to carry a sweater for the freezing restaurants, malls, and theaters that are running air conditioning at full blast. We have all been here. How bout those who do not have access to running air conditioning? What do they do when the summer month hit their peak in heat? Cold Nights and Warm Days
12/26/2018 (Permalink)
Winters in Texas can be frustrating, to say the least. Freezing nights to mildly warm days can cause problems with your health as well as your over all living conditions. Going from hot to cold can have a negative effect on your immune system. It can also have an effect on your home. Going rapidly from warm to freezing can cause problems with older homes plumbing systems. It can cause the pipes to subtly bend and eventually bust, leading you to call a plumber as well as a restoration company to fix the problem. Sometime the burst or leak can be so minor that one may not even notice, resulting in major damages. Water damage in homes that go unnoticed can also result in mold issues.

Its a Winter Wonderland in Houston, Texas

SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress service trucks topped with our "once every ten years, snow fall."
Its a Winter Wonderland in Houston, Texas
It’s a winter wonderland here in Houston Texas this morning. Houstonians across the metro area are waking up to white yards and slick streets after an overnight dusting of snow. The first reports of light snow came late Thursday in Katy, Spring and The Woodlands as near-freezing weather blew through the region. The winter weather produced just enough for a few snowballs or maybe even a small snowman.
On average, a snow event like this in Houston and the gulf coast happens only once every 20 years. Houston gets about one snowfall every 10 years. The odds are not with us that we will have snow this winter season, let alone on Christmas morning. However, things are about to get quite cold here with a strong cold front this Thursday and a freeze for the northern counties this weekend.
All of us here at SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress want to remind all Houstonians about the small dangers of snow fall, even at a minor level. Due to the overnight freeze, Houstonians are waking up to frozen busted pipes and cracked windows. These are a few our least favorite things. There is nothing to worry about, because SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress is always here for the people of this great city of ours.

Chris and Mike Johnston, Father and Son, Restoration Experts
Like Father Like Son
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Like father like son. Monkey see monkey do. There are a million sayings that you can say when referring to a son acting like his father. Mike Johnston was the owner of SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress and SERVPRO of Champions 1960 for a long time. He has performed many water restoration and fire restoration jobs throughout his life. Working under him as a helper was his son Chris Johnston.
When Chris, who is now the owner, was in high school he bought his own car. To pay for this car he worked at SERVPRO of Champions 1960 under his father. Performing hands on water restoration and fire restoration jobs. As Chris said “I knew I wanted the car but I didn’t think about the cost of gas!” So throughout high school Chris paid his gas bills and car bills by being a restoration technician.
After College Chris came back to Houston, TX to take over the family business so his father could retire. SERVPRO of Katy/Cypress and Champions 1960 is truly a family owned and family operated business; second-generation business. Chris cares about this business almost as much as he cares about his clients.

Continuing Education Courses
Here at SERVPRO we always want to make sure our customers are happy with our work on water restoration and fire restoration. While it is our main concern to handle our jobs we also want to make sure that the insurance agents that send us jobs know how much we care about them.
At SERVPRO we are known for our expertise in the field of water restoration, fire restoration, mold remediation, and any other type of restoration that is needed. One way we help spread our knowledge on our expertise is through continuing education courses.
About once a month SERVPRO holds classes called continuing education courses for insurance agents. These classes are on things such as water restoration, fire restoration, mold remediation, ethics, and anything else that SERVPRO might have to do.
If you would like to come to our Continuing Education classes, please contact our office and we will be glad to have you! They are free!

BNI
As a local business, we try and make sure that we help out other local businesses. Our sales marketing representative Mannie Gamez represents our company at a local BNI. The BNI (Business Network International) is a collection of local businesses who agree to help refer each other. This way we help our community through fire restoration and water restoration and we help support local businesses too.
Usually at BNI events many representatives of many local businesses get together and introduce themselves. There is food and coffee and everyone gets a chance to talk about what their business can do for you. It is truly a great business to business meeting that helps your local business and your local community.
It is very important to us to help our community. While we are experts in mold remediation, fire restoration, and water restoration we also want to help our community in other ways. Joining your local BNI can help support your community though specialization. After all capitalism thrives on specialization. It is the reason we have so many options for so many things. We love our community and will do what it takes to support it!
